On 16th September we had a visit from Jeanne Sampier who is involved with Green Sod Ireland's bee-friendly planting project; "Bee Aware". We learned about pollination and how to identify different Irish bumblebee species.... a selection of the 99 different Bee species that we have here in Ireland!!!
We wanted to make our school a bee-friendly habitat. We prepared a plot; weeded it, took away the rubbish and raked it. Then we were ready to sow our seeds. Jeanne gave us a mixture of 40 different seeds that she got from Design By Nature. They included flowers that will have plenty of nectar and pollen for the bees.
Jeanne gave us more seeds to plant in February and we’ll be keeping an eye out for our flowers to sprout in March so check back in with us for an update then!!
If you'd like to join us in creating a bee-friendly habitat in your garden you can get the seeds from Design By Nature which includes their All-Ireland Pollinator Plan Wildflower Mixture:
