On the 25th April, 6th class made their Confirmation in the Holy Family Church, Mervue. We were delighted to have the new Bishop of Galway, Brendan Kelly confirm us on the day. A lot of preparation went into our Mass and it was a very enjoyable ceremony.

In January, we studied Real Life Maths situations. Our teacher gave us a task to find out how much pizza we could get for €50. We were split into 4 groups and each group had to nominate a Team Leader, choose a Group Name and come up with 2 Golden Rules. The teams were called The Darts, The Dark Brotherhood, The Keep Calms and The Griffins. We had project time all week to come up with a solution. We had to research local restaurants (pizzerias) to find out which one could give us the best deal. We used technology to help us in our research and to find the Area of a Circle. We were then shown how to create a PowerPoint and had to present our findings to our class on the Friday. It was a great success and everyone had fun while learning Maths!!

Every morning at 10 o'clock our class does the 10@10 using the RTEJr website. Here, Gráinne & Micheál put us through our paces with a wide variety of exercises. Our teacher has noticed a big improvement in our concentration after completing the 10@10. It is great fun and we all have a good laugh. Thanks so much to Mateusz' Mom for making us delicious pancakes and sending in chocolate and strawberry syrup. We all agreed they tasted AMAZING!!! This month, in 6th Class, we have been focusing on World War 2 while reading our novel, 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' by John Boyne. The boys orgsnised themselves into groups and were given the task to create a project using Photostory explaining the link between our Crocus Garden, WW2 and our novel. Everybody worked really hard and we were delighted with the results. Click on the links below to view our Photostories.
The Historians
Our sixth class project was about WW2. We had to show the connection our crocus garden had to our novel “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas”. We had to present it onto a Photostory. Our group name was:The Historians Our team leader was : John/Kacper Our team members are:John,Kacper,Jakub and Noel We first had to plan. In our Photostory we had to add text, suitable music and pictures. It wasn't that easy, some of the pictures were irrelevant and we had to delete them. It was also hard to find suitable music. We all worked as a group, everybody had a turn.We got to present it to our class and our neighbouring 5th class. At the end every group did 2 Stars and a Wish, where we gave 2 positive and 1 negative feedback. It was great fun but a lot of us were nervous about presenting it. the historians_2 from St. Michaels School on Vimeo.

Our group name was: WarCookies Our team leader was:Leo.H Our team members are:Dickson Nana,Leo H.,Mateusz Stasiak,Harris Ofil At first we started to make our storyboard and planning all the things we had to do. Then we started to research, after that we began to make our photostory. We started to look up pictures from Google. After that we began to import all the pictures to our PhotoStory and imported our music and started with our transitions and when we were finished we had to present it to other classes. Based on the “Boy in the Striped Pyjamas” and WW2 WAR COOKIES 1 from St. Michaels School on Vimeo. Great fun was had on the day of the holidays. After Assembly, we played lots of Halloween games, including 'Grape on the flour' and 'Hanging Donuts'. We also showed our spooky dance moves to Monster Mash and Thriller. A great effort was made dressing up. Today we planted crocuses to commemorate the death of 1.5 Million children during the holocaust of World War Two. During this war Hitler was in reign of Germany and the Nazi’s captured the Jewish people and sent them to work camps where they were forced to wear a Star of David on their clothing. Sixth class got the inspiration for this project from reading our class novel ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ by John Boyne. This book had on its cover the Star of David on a boy’s pyjamas. We planted the flowers in the shape of the Star of David as a symbol of the lives that were lost during this sad time. Keep watching for updates on the growth of our beautiful Crocuses and our further learning on World War Two. To celebrate World Book Day 6th class got the opportunity to go into town to Charlie Byrne's Bookshop to listen to author Nicola Pierce. The boys absolutely loved listening to her speak so passionately about her novels! She predominately bases her novels on Irish history, so she had lots to tell us. All the pupils also got a voucher to get a free book for World Book Day. Many thanks to Ms. Mannion for organising this wonderful event for us! Our school entered the Aldi Schools Play Rugby Programme. 6th class are participating in training sessions for tag rugby. Teachers are trained up by coaches and their skills are then passed on to the pupils, with a view to taking part in a blitz coming soon!
6th class went to Ballybane library to see Dublin-based author Brian Gallagher. He is a renowned children's author of stories like "Friend or Foe," "Taking Sides" and "Arrivals." The children loved chatting to him about his work, especially his novels based on 1916, one of which we read!
Our 5th and 6th class trip into The Town Hall Theatre was a great day out in October. We went to see "A Feast of Bones" which the children thought was excellent!
Ms. Curran's 6th class students have been busy since October working on the JEP project. All our hard work finally paid off and we had our hugely successful "pop-up" shop on 21st February. Our product "Choco Treats" was very popular and everyone had a brilliant day! Our sincerest thanks to all those who supported our venture, especially all the students and parents who bought our product on the day. Well done to the boys in Rang 6 for all their hard work and determination! Ms. Curran's 6th class are involved in JEP-Junior Entrepreneur Programme. From September to December 2016, Ms. Myers’ 6th class were involved in a Sky Sports Mentoring project called Sky Sports Living for Sport. The objective of the project was for 6th class to mentor a younger class and teach them a new skill. The boys had the opportunity to work alongside Conor Galvin from Connacht Rugby and Kevin Conlan from Sky Sports over a 12 week period. They then used the skills they had learned to teach Ms. Cunningham’s 2nd Class touch rugby. Not only did this initiative bring great enjoyment to both classes but it also improved the children’s self-confidence, behaviour, self-esteem and social skills. Our wonderful parent's committee have been hard at work again. They have been painting glass jars and making other fabulous crafts to sell at our Christmas market. Last year all money raised was used to buy valuable First Aid equipment. The committee gave a preview of their goods and there was a fun raffle. The staff and children greatly appreciate their efforts! Ms. Curran's 6th Class have been busy preparing for Halloween!! We used collage and Pinterest to create our spooky pictures!
