Our Global Citizenship Green Schools journey began 2 years ago when we launched this project and a sister Erasmus project. Jan O'Sullivan kindly launched the programme. We were joined by teachers from schools all over Europe and also TD's Brian Walsh and Derek Nolan.
Action Day 2015 - Europe Day
We've hosted 2 Action Days - one in May 2015 focusing on Europe and one in May 2016 encompassing cultures, foods and projects from all around the world.
In 2015 the students completed and displayed history, geography and art projects on countries from all over Europe. Committee members introduced students to past projects completed.

Action Day 2016 - International Day
Last year for our Action Day we were very lucky to be joined by Dawits family and Oskar's family who brought us an amazing array of foods from Ethiopia and Poland. ICT projects on the history of their countries were presented. Boys across the school dressed in their national dress and soccer jerseys from all over the world. We are in a very lucky position in St. Michael's to have an amazingly diverse student population. The projects on display at our action day really reflected this.
Crocus Project | We relaunched the Crocus Project in the school and invited teachers from other parts of Europe to join us in creating the Star of David and planting of the crocuses. |
Our senior classes taught us a lot about the Holocaust and shared poems and projects...
Art Competition
We held a Global Citizenship art competition and were seriously impressed with the artistic talent in our school....
We were awarded the blue star flag!
The Blue Star Programme is an education initiative for primary school students across Ireland. The idea of the Programme is simple: to foster better understanding and knowledge of the European Union and how it affects the lives of Irish citizens among Irish primary pupils through classroom projects and activities. Our students really engaged with this programme and were rewarded for their efforts. They attended government buildings in Galway and Dublin, met with and had Q & A's with TD's and as seen above they completed projects on the Holocaust but also partook in a 1916 Video Programme (a clip from the video created can be seen on our homepage).
Choir Singing for the community
Fundraising | We've raised over €1,000.00 for the Hospice since this project commenced. Well done and a huge thank you to all who donated. |
We are also lucky to have a very dedicated parent's group who have been hard at work creating stunning painted glass pieces and beautiful hand-crafted blankets and embroidered pictures. These are sold at our Christmas Market and the parents kindly donate the funds for a variety of causes. This year they are also raising funds for the Hospice. We are very grateful for all their efforts.
