Third Class have been busy identifying trees, plants and shrubs in our grounds, locating habitats and even spotting a few little creepy crawlies along the way. With magnifying glasses, plant life cycle surveys and leaf identification sheets in hand here is a taste of what they got up to...
We will be continuing our work on biodiversity outside school. Every student has pledged to make one change to better our planet. Whether it's planting pollinator-friendly plants and shrubs, asking parents to mow the lawn a little less often, building a mini bug hotel or spreading the word to reduce and reuse plastic we will all be busy continuing our biodiversity work at home. #greenschools
We have been really impressed with our plastic alternatives. The boys who tried out the paper straws managed to rinse and reuse them. The wooden pencils, pens and rulers got great feedback. Those that reviewed the wooden pen felt it was MORE comfortable to hold and had a better grip than it's plastic alternative. The Keep Cup was incredible as there was no 'plastic taste'. We've discovered lots of cafes that are only too happy to fill it up! And the biggest success for us, as it was made completely from biodegradable materials, was the toothbrush. It was so comfortable to use and performed just as well as any of the plastic alternatives. We have been converted!!! A huge thank you to @galwaygreenleaf for allowing us to review these products. Now we need to extend our efforts and see if we can continue our plastic-free movement! #plasticfreeforaweek #plasticfreegalway
All Set For Plastic Free Week 2019 Here in St. Michael's #plasticfreegalway #plasticfreeforaweek @galwaygreenleaf
We'll be joining @galwaygreenleaf for #plasticfreeforaweek this week and will be trying out lots of plastic alternatives. We've got paper straws, wooden q-tips, wooden pens and colouring pencils, fairtrade cotton bags, wooden rulers, reusable cups and even a bamboo toothbrush to test and compare with the plastic alternative....we'll keep you posted on how we get on!
And here are some of the volunteers who are testing our plastic alternatives...
Here is a little video about our Biodiversity Journey so far. A huge thank you to all members of the Greeen School's Committee and all the organisations who have been helping us on this journey. We look forward to continuing our efforts.
