You'll notice that our nature trail numbers are in now too and we can't wait to follow the trail...just a little more research to do first!!!!
After cataloguing the trees in our school grounds with David and Sinead we realised we didn't have a very important native tree - The Blackthorn. The Green Schools Committee are pictured here with the two saplings that we have planted. You'll notice that our nature trail numbers are in now too and we can't wait to follow the trail...just a little more research to do first!!!! While we were planting we spotted quite a few bird's nests in our more mature trees. Count them with us...

This week we have gone #plasticfreeforaweek in St. Michael's - and even the teachers had to bring their own mugs instead of using disposable cups when buying their coffee in the morning! The committee have been monitoring plastic use all week and reminding fellow students, parents and teachers to get involved. Well done to ALL who entered the Plastic Free Week Art Competition. The Green Schools Committee were blown away by the effort that went into all the posters. It made the job of picking just one winner very difficult. But after much deliberation the winners were Darragh Finnerty (1st place) and Daniel Ofili (2nd Place). Huge congrats and well deserved to both of them.
As many of you will know St. Michael's has converted from using disposable water bottles to long lasting water bottles. We will save approximately 24,300 water bottles this year and every year with this one initiative. #plasticfreegalway @galwaygreenleaf Despite Climate Action Week being flanked by Ex-hurricane Ophelia and Storm Brian we partnered with @GalwayGreenLeaf and @EuropeanGreenCapitalAward to carry out some of our proposed actions and to get started on all. Our fourth and fifth classes were involved in planting bluebells, studying leaves to identify trees in order to create a nature trail within our school grounds and the building of a bug hotel - Buggingham Palace! We will also be planting an edible garden and a Blackthorn in the coming weeks. Work is still ongoing and we cannot wait to see the finished products. We also managed to start clearing out some of our raised beds to begin our edible garden and look forward to planting these soon. @GreenSchoolsIreland @AnTaisce
We were delighted to have received the Green Flag for Global Citizenship Litter and Waste in May which was presented to committee members Billy Regan and Destiny Ajiboie in the Galway Bay Hotel. We have now commenced a new Green Flag Programme and will be focusing on Biodiversity. We are so excited about this programme and would love to hear from you with ideas....
THE AIM OF THE PROGRAMME IS To increase awareness of the importance of native plants, animals and habitats, and to increase species-richness in a locality. Our ideas so far include creating a nature trail, a bug hotel, creating a school trees database with leaf recognition programmes, to increase our Bee Aware meadow, to create an edible garden and to plant more native plants and trees including blackthorns, snowdrops, bluebells, crocuses and more... Third class are back with an update on their Bee Aware Project. They've been pulling grasses and watering the plot through the winter and are now starting to see the rewards for all their hard work. They managed to find a few little buds just beginning to grow and with the help of Jeanne identified a few - red clover, yarrow, dandelions, birds foot trefoil and more.... Fingers crossed we'll see a lot more from them over the next few months.
Well done to everyone who has been walking to school. Ms. Cunningham's and Ms. Curran's classes are proving very hard to beat!!!!
The Green Schools Committee had a very difficult job to do this week. The committee agreed that our school should enter this years Green Schools Global Goals Competition with the theme being Goal 6: Water and Sanitation. They had to choose ten posters from a huge number of amazing entries. The following are the ten successful posters which have now been submitted to the national competition. Well done to all who entered and blew us away with their artistic talent. Best of luck to our successful artists: Nataniel & Adam from second class, Daragh & Dumebi from third class, Matthew, Daniel, Nathan & Joshua from fourth class, Leo H and Harris from fifth class and Jordan from 6th class. Let's hope you're as successful in the national competition! Well done to the Winners! |
