The committee have started a fun initiative to get the whole school thinking more about how we can do so many things every day to help improve our earth. And it's pretty easy....we simply nominate students or staff who are spotted doing something "green". Callum in second class came up with our hashtag and we think it is really effective...well done Callum. So get nominating everyone.... #EARTH!!!!! Well done to Ms. Curran's 5th class who performed this multi-lingual song and reminded us that this world really is a very small one.... We've heard a lot of our fellow students commenting on the amount of homeless people they are seeing in town so we decided to host a Christmas Jumper Day in aid of Galway Simon Community. Even our teachers got into the spirit of the day by wearing Christmas jumpers. We searched under cushions and behind couches for all the coins we could find and managed to raise €200.00. So much fun and festive cheer was spread throughout the school and we were delighted that it was all for a great cause. Let's hope it helps a lot of homeless in Galway this Christmas.
Well done 2nd Class - they've been super troopers this week!!!! Keep on walking boys.... Well the 'No Homework' incentive seems to have increased the competitiveness of each class - and the success of the Golden Boot Award... Well done to everyone who's making the effort to walk at least part of the way to school. Really impressed with all your efforts and huge congrats to this months winning classes...
After reviewing the results of our Global Citizenship survey we discovered that a huge chunk of our student population had never been involved in a community clean up. While a lot of our classes clean the school grounds regularly we decided to brace the cold weather as a whole school and clean the school grounds and community. We even managed a few Mannequin Challenges along the way!!! Almost 2 years ago we commenced our journey to apply for the Global Citizenship - Litter and Waste Green Flag. We've done a lot since then and will be posting photos of some of the events that took place along the way shortly. But at the start of the process we carried out surveys in our school. Oskar in 6th Class has shown the results on a graph - in preparation for our new graphs when we complete the surveys again to show the increase in knowledge and the practical improvements that have taken place in our school.
St. Michael's, and our partner school, The Holy Trinity, were among the first schools in the county to be awarded The Transport Maintenance Pennant today. This is a Green Schools initiative run in conjunction with An Taisce and The National Roads Authority. We were awarded the pennant to acknowledge a 22% increase in the number of boys walking to school. This increase would not have been possible without the dedication of the students and parents who still continue to use the Walking Bus from Ballybane Church every morning (weather permitting)! To acknowledge the incredible efforts of the students and parents a reception was held in The G Hotel today where Dylan and Alex accepted St. Michael's Travel Pennant and Award Certificate and all enjoyed scones, croissants and hot chocolates!!! We have no doubt that the Walking Bus will continue to be a huge success. We've also begun our Golden Boot Award again....hopefully we can increase the number of boys walking to school even more! On September 16th 2016 Ms Wallace and her class participated in Green Sod Ireland's bee-friendly planting project; "Bee Aware". They were very lucky to get a visit from bee expert, Jeanne Sampier. During the workshop the students learned about pollination, how to identify common Irish bumblebee species and how to help local bees by making their school garden more bee-friendly. With Jeanne's help the students and Ms Wallace sowed native Irish wild flower seeds in the garden including Bird's foot trefoil, Red clover, Field scabious, Lesser knapweed, Oxeye daisy and Yellow rattle; all of which provide vital nectar and pollen for foraging bees. The class also received native Irish wild flower seeds to sow in seed trays and plant in pots and flower beds to encourage more bee-friendly planting in the community! They hope to do this in February so that the bees will be kept busy all summer! Check in with us again for more photos of how their flowers are growing in Spring. Bee Aware seeds are sourced from Design By Nature and include their All-Ireland Pollinator Plan Wildflower Mixture: http://www.wildflowers.ie/mixes/wf/wf03.htm |
